Bea Young Associates

Co-author Bea Young is founder and principal of Bea Young Associates, LLC: Collaboration for Educational Equity. She began her career as a high school history teacher in Chicago Public Schools from 1960 to 1965.  As the first Education Services Director of the Illinois Commission on Human Relations and later as Executive Director, she and her staff were instrumental in helping to integrate Illinois high schools and introducing Black History into the curriculum during the turbulent decade from l965 to l975.

Offered a challenge in the corporate world with Harbridge House Inc., an international consulting firm, she became one of the first Diversity and Inclusion consultants to use a systemic cultural change approach to impact the long-range plans of Fortune 500 companies for almost 20 years. In l993, she founded The Kaleidoscope Group, her first entrepreneurial effort to continue this corporate work.

But her heart was in education and in 2010 she founded Bea Young Associates, LLC (BYA) focused solely on collaborating with school districts, colleges and other educational organizations to understand the need for equity in education in order to close the Achievement Gap for students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The powerful student achievement results at Illinois School Districts 202 and 98 are replicable when educational organizations and the communities they serve foster success for all students through cultural responsiveness.  As Restoring the Soul to Education: Equity Closes the Achievement Gap demonstrates, the skills and processes required to create systemic and sustainable change within school organizations can be learned.
